Create bright and bold festive handmade decorations for a Cinco de Mayo celebration! Let's begin with the table. Use either color paper placemats or 11"x17" stock paper for placemats. Glue a strip of fridge along the width of each placemat. Have fun mixing colors! For the centerpiece, paint medium size clay flower pots in bright orange, red and yellow. Fill the pots with brightly wrapped candies.
Decorate the walls for Cinco de Mayo with homemade Mexican garland. Cut a sheet of tissue paper in half. Fold each have in quarters. Then fold an inch, fan, fold again, etc. Using decorative hole punchers, punch designs into the tissue paper. Don't punch on a fold, it may cause it to tear. Once the holes have been made, carefully unfold the tissue. Use a warm iron to smooth out wrinkles. Make a one inch fold along the length of each sheet. Run a string just below the fold of each sheet to create the garland. Tape or glue the one inch over the string. Drape the garland along the walls.
Every Cinco de Mayo celebration has to include a piņata, so why not surprise guests with a homemade piņata? It's easy! Inflate a large round balloon. Make a paste using 4 1/2 cups water and 1 cup wheat-paste powder (found in hardware stores). Dip newspaper strips into the paste and place them on the balloon. Overlap the strips a little. Let dry for 24 hours. Repeat the process twice, but use colorful tissue paper for the final layer. Glue bright streamers to the piņata. Create a small flap at the top to insert candy and small toys. Poke two holes near the top. Run a strong cord between the two holes to hang the piņata.
